ACT Test Guide: Everything You Need To Know

ACT Test

The ACT test is a college entrance exam that most colleges and universities use to determine admissions. ACT, Inc. administers a multiple-choice, pencil-and-paper test.

The ACT test is designed to measure a high school student’s college readiness and provide universities with a single data point to evaluate all applicants. Standardized test scores will be evaluated alongside your high school GPA, classes taken in high school, letters of recommendation from teachers or mentors, extracurricular activities, admissions interviews, and personal essays by college admissions staff. The significance of ACT scores in the college admission process varies per school.

Overall, the higher your ACT and/or SAT scores are, the more alternatives you’ll have for going and paying for college.

When Should I Take The ACT Test?

The ACT, SAT, or both are taken by the majority of high school students in the spring of their junior year or the fall of their senior year. It’s critical to give yourself enough time to retake the test if you need to improve your score before applying to college. Every year in September, October, December, February, April, June, and July, the ACT exam is administered nationwide. See a list of all forthcoming ACT exam dates.

ACT Exam Basics
ACT Length2 hrs, 55 minutes (plus 40 minutes if taking the ACT with writing)
ACT SectionsEnglishReadingScienceMathWriting (Optional)
Cost150 USD (Without Writing)166.50 USD (With Writing)
Maximum Score36
Average Score21

How Is The ACT Exam Scored?

The ACT is graded on a scale of 1 to 36 for each section. The average of your four section scores, also on a scale of 1 to 36, is your composite ACT score. You will obtain a different score on the Writing Test if you take the ACT with Writing Test.

ACT or SAT? Which One Should I Choose?

Most colleges and universities accept scores from both the SAT and the ACT and do not prefer one over the other. College-bound kids, on the other hand, are increasingly taking both the SAT and the ACT. The SAT’s 2016 changes have made it easier than ever to prepare for both tests at the same time—and to get competitive results on both!

The easiest way to figure out whether the SAT, ACT or both tests are right for you is to take a timed full-length practice exam of each type. Because the SAT and ACT are so similar in substance and style, factors like how you handle time pressure and what types of questions you find the most difficult can help you figure out which exam is a better fit.

Is There An ACT Pre Test?

ACT today announced the launch of PreACT™, a tenth-grade multiple-choice assessment that helps students prepare for the ACT® test experience and gives information about their future exam performance. Starting in the fall, schools, districts, and states will be eligible to take the new test.

ACT Test Results

The results of the ACT online test are usually available online within eight weeks of the test administration. If you took the ACT with writing, your writing results will be available online as soon as they are available, which is usually two weeks after your general results.

The ACT is only given a few times a year, between September and July. You do not have the option of choosing an exam date that is convenient for you like you do with other tests. You should schedule your exam preparation around these test dates. These exams are timed to coincide with your autumn semester application deadlines.

Points To Remember In ACT Test

  • It is recommended that you register for the exam two to three months prior to your preferred exam date.
  • It is safer to register early because you will have a clear schedule to follow in order to prepare for the exam.
  • If you are thinking about attending exam preparation classes, the coaching schools will advise you to sign up as soon as possible so that you have plenty of time to prepare.

Self-study and Coaching Classes are the two approaches to prepare for the ACT. Both of these solutions have distinct advantages, and neither can be regarded as superior to the other. Because these two strategies serve different audiences, they cannot be compared. The type of study used would be determined by the exam takers’ needs and interests.

Self-Study: If money is an issue and you are confident in your ability to prepare adequately without supervision, self-study may be a preferable alternative for ACT test preparation. You can save money on private tuition and programmes, but you must consider other variables as well. To study efficiently on your own, you’ll need a solid library of books and study materials, as well as motivation and self-discipline.
