Which Are The Best Gap Year Destinations On A Budget?

gap year destinations

Do you remember the time when Ross and Rachel were on a break? Gap years are like that.  A gap year is when you take a break from your studies and gain some real life experiences through travelling and volunteering, learn leadership skills, new languages and culture. You need a breather from those continuous hours of study and when you decide to take a gap year, that’s when you bid adieu to your studies (at least for the time being!). You’re obviously going to want to make the most out of your gap year. But you also have an in-between budget crisis (like Rachel did most of the time). If you’re in search of a nice vacation break, then here’s a list of the top most affordable gap year destinations that will make your year worth it.

Since we’re talking about budget, take a look at the chart below showing some of the best gap year destinations that fit into your budget.

Best Places To Go On A Gap Year

Australia | Top Gap Year Destinations

Australia is versatile! While considering your gap year destinations, many students rule out Australia, budget constraints being the reason. But what if I told you that the budget will not come in between you and the land of vast plains and kangaroos? While Australia hosts top universities for students and comes under the top 10 study destinations; there’s so much more to it for you to explore. Coastal walks to the beaches, ferry commutes across the harbour and dozens of other outdoor activities are some of the fun things you can do.

Plane Ticket: £550 – £650
Hostels: £12 – £20
Eating out: £8 – £1

Canada

I’m sure Canada would have been one of the first gap year destinations that you might have considered. A country full of national parks and natural beauty; spending your vacation there would be a great choice. Renting a car or going via the city buses are great ways to save money there. Another trick for affording your vacation in Canada would be to get your hands on the Discovery Pass, a £40 yearly pass to 80 of Canada’s national parks. All of these reasons make Canada one of the best places to go on a gap year.

Plane ticket: £300 – £350
Hostels: £10 – £20
Eating out: £10 – £20

Note: Canada is full of many cities where you have tonnes of budget-friendly options to choose from. Calgary is one such city. If you wish to know how to have a quality time in Calgary, here’s a blog that might be useful to you:

Argentina | Best Gap Year Travel Destinations

Argentina is one of the favourite gap year travel destinations for most students. Popularly known as the Europe of South America, Argentina is an adventurous destination. Public transport is very cheap and affordable in this country so your budget need not worry. Hostels often work with local tourist boards and travel agents to organise tours to these places, and the prices are pretty reasonable.

Plane ticket: £500 – £600
Hostels: £7 – £12
Eating out: £4 – £8

Italy

From free walking tours to beautiful galleries, Italy is one of the most preferred gap year destinations due to its open and friendly atmosphere. Make sure you drop by The Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain and St Peter’s Basilica which are all free. Most of the students who go for vacationing in Europe land at Lake Garda which is home to many campsites and take students as workers especially during the hot summers.

Plane ticket: £70 – £100
Hostel: £10 – £20
Eating out: £15 – £20

Morocco

For reasons unknown, Morocco is not among the first gap year destinations that pops up to a student’s mind on a vacation mode. But let me tell you that Morocco is a beautiful country to visit on a gap year when the temperatures are within 15 degrees to 30 degrees. There’s no point in going to Morocco and not visiting a hammam. If you’re someone who enjoys drinking, then I’d ask you to be a tad bit careful because it is frowned upon for religious reasons.

Plane ticket: £100 – £150
Hostels: £5 – £10
Eating out: £3 – £5

Spain falls under the top gap year destinations for its warm and welcoming nature. You will slowly begin to fall in love with the culture, the landscapes, and the food there. Spain has a lot to offer to its tourists who are often left spellbound by the end of their vacation. An added advantage to Spain is that it is a lot cheaper than most countries and will perfectly fit into your budget scales.
