How to Keep Your College Credits- A Complete Guide

In this article we tell you everything you need to know about how to keep your college credits while transferring colleges.

If you are not happy with your current college and wish to transfer to another one, you need to be mindful about transferring and keeping your college credits in retention so it saves you the time and effort to earn them again. This is a very critical consideration applicable only to transfer students and not freshmen. You have to make sure that you are, ideally, able to keep all or most of your credits on college transfer. To be able to do this, you should do proper research on different colleges along with their transfer requirements, which differ in different universities. If you are looking for a detailed guide on how to keep your college credits, keep the following points in mind-

Choose a Transfer-Friendly Course and University

Consider applying to those colleges which have transfer-friendly programs. Many colleges have a generous policy of accepting transfer credits while some others don’t. Their main aim is to determine how your previous learning has helped you prepare to study in your current course. If your previously earned credits can attest to that, then they are more easily accepted by most universities.

Submit All The Needed Transcripts.

You need to keep track of all the classes and tests you have undertaken, whether at community college or high school which might count as transfer credits. Many times students tend to forget to submit such transcripts which might give them hidden credits or extra credits. Each school has a separate policy for this which you need to keep in mind.

Talk To Your Admissions Advisor

Your new college will most probably be keen to help you adapt and enroll in the college quickly with convenience. Talk to your admissions officer about keeping your college credits. He or she might know of courses that require fewer credits or be able to point out some of your educational experience that counts as credit that you missed out on. You need to be more proactive and willing to ask for advice to avail the full benefits of having an admissions advisor.

Get Credit For Work Experience

There may be an option for you to be able to earn and keep your college credits based on your previous work experience or background if you are wondering about how to keep your college credits. While this is not available in all colleges, a number of universities do provide you with the opportunity to convert your real work experience to college credit.

If you’re an international student who requires assistance with student accommodation and/or an education loan, all you have to do is fill the form to your right-

Try to Get Into Colleges With Transfer Agreements

A lot of community colleges get into transfer agreements with other colleges and universities in the same state or region. Transfer agreements are also called articulation agreements Transfer agreements outline what classes you need to take to be able to keep your college credits on transferring colleges. In some cases, you will also get guaranteed admission into the college you transfer to under the agreement, provided you follow the mentioned rules.

Minimum Required Grades To Keep Your Credits

Generally, you need to maintain at least a C grade or higher grade to be able to keep your college credits. Colleges do not accept transfer credits for a grade lower than that.  You need to maintain this average grade only for admission to your current college, after which you will be able to start afresh in your new course. If you wish to retain your previous college credits you need to be mindful of your grades in all subjects at your current college and also look at the subjective grade requirement in your transfer college to be able to successfully keep all your college credits.

Know About The Credit Limits

Many colleges often put a limit on the number of credits you can transfer to your program from your previous school. Most colleges accept up to 64 credits from your previous college to use towards your undergraduate degree at their institute.  At times even if your credits are transferred they are counted as elective credits which are namesake and not course credits which add value to your degree. You need to make sure that you don’t waste your time and effort on such classes that don’t give transfer credits.

Research About Tests That Will Give You Transfer Credits

You don’t always need classes or a course to get course credits! If you are researching how to keep your college credits, you should know that there are a number of tests which if undertaken and passed award you with transfer credits for college. Make sure the tests you take are from nationally recognized testing companies. These companies take tests in dozens of different subjects, so chances are they take tests on your chosen college subjects too. If you pass the tests and show proficiency in the subject you automatically earn the needed transfer credits! Such tests save a lot of time and effort for you and you don’t have to worry about repeating classes!
