Intakes In Germany: Things to know

Germany has been a country which runs on efficiency and this is reflected in its institutes too. The fact that most of the universities here have no tuition fees shows how much emphasis they put on education. For excellent educational growth, Germany is the country to be in. There are multiple public universities and each has to be navigated along with their respective intakes in Germany. Intakes

There are a total of two intakes in Germany, one takes place during the Winter and the other one during the Summer. Let’s understand more about these intakes.

Winter Intake

This intake is when most of the students aboard apply to German universities. One of the biggest factors for a large number of applications is that most of the universities open all of their programmes. So it is highly recommended that you opt for this intake when deciding among the intakes in Germany. This intake starts in September – October and lasts till February – March. Therefore is it important to start preparations from April or June for the winter intake.

Summer Intake

This is the second intake for Germany and is usually less favourable than the winter intake. Here the number of universities and programmes open will be lesser, however, some programmes that were not available for the winter intake might be open now. Another aspect to consider is that the number of applications will be lesser among the intakes in Germany hence the acceptance rate will be higher. The intake begins in April and goes on till July – August. Preparation for this intake should start around August or September for ample buffer space.

Universities

The public institutes in Germany also offer very low or no tuition fees to international students. Therefore it is wise to do thorough research and understand which Germany intakes best fit you as per the university. Here is a list of some universities that will be open during each of the intakes.

Exams

German universities generally receive a lot of applications for academics. Therefore it is crucial to have a good score on the tests that are required for admissions. These exams might differ from universities but won’t be affected by which of the intakes in Germany you opt for.

Language Tests – If the classes are taught in English then you would require IELTS or TOEFL scores. If the classes are held in German, then you would need a German language proficiency score.

Aptitude Tests – GRE or GMAT is required by many universities for the intakes in Germany for masters. GRE is usually applicable for most graduate courses while GMAT is specifically for business/management-related courses/universities.

Visa/Travel

When preparing for the visa process, it is good to keep in mind that it takes 3 months to acquire one. The same goes for the flight tickets too, the earlier they are booked the cheaper they will be available for. The time of the year also affects visas and tickets, however, this can’t be compromised, hence it is beneficial to start the process early.
