statement of purpose for an internship

"You can make anything by writing" - a great man once proclaimed. On both a professional and personal level, I'd regard it as fuel for my soul.

We can all agree that the greatest approach to begin a career is through an internship. Although some individuals would find it easy to get their internships, for others it might be quite tricky to get approved for the position of an intern at a company or organisation. A statement of purpose for an internship will be useful in this situation. Your SOP will outline why you are the ideal candidate for the position, how you can benefit the company, and what you hope to learn from your experience.

What Is A Statement Of Purpose For An Internship?

An SOP for an internship is an article in which you must convince & persuade a recruiter to hire you. It should not just be about who and what you are today, but also about who you aspire to be in the future, your goals, ambitions, and desires. It is the sole document that allows you to express yourself and is unique since each individual experience is unique, and putting down your experience properly may do wonders for your application. Some firms search for individuals who not only have a great academic record, but also candidates who share their vision, and an SOP becomes a significant aspect of an application for them.

How To Write The Ideal SOP For Internships?

There is a good probability that an organisation may receive a tonne of applications from applicants who are similarly qualified, but an SOP will always be distinctive and will highlight a candidate’s talents that go beyond any degree or academic record. An essay titled ‘Statement of Purpose’ (SOP) explains why a candidate is the best fit for the open position and what he or she hopes to gain from the experience on a personal and professional level. This article lists how to go about your statement of purpose for an internship and also features SOP samples for an internship.

Step 1: Write The Date & Address

Your letter should begin as you would any other formal business letter with the complete date aligned to the left margin and the contact information for the receiver (full name, firm-department name, and postal address) two lines down. Here’s what it should look like –

Step 2: Start With A Greeting

Greet the receiver with a formal salutation such as ‘Dear,’ accompanied by the proper honorific, such as ‘Mr.,’ ‘Ms.,’ ‘Professor,’ or ‘Dr.,’ and the person’s last name. Your statement of purpose for an internship may be rejected if you do not write a salutation or greet the person well or may include ‘To whomsoever, it may concern’.

Dear Dr Smith

Step 3: State The Reason For Your SOP

In the introduction, inform the recipient of the letter’s aim. Indicate the post you want, the name of the department, if appropriate, and the time frame for your appointment. Here’s what your introduction should look like –

I’m writing to you because I recently came across the zoology department’s opening for a research assistant for the next semester and I’d like to apply for the same.

Step 4: Give A Brief Introduction Of Yourself

In your statement of purpose for an internship, make sure you include some basic information about your past that relates to your work profile, such as your academic background, place of study, current employer, or sector of employment.

I’m a senior honours student studying zoology at Colorado State. The internship opportunity at the Atwood Ornithology Center this summer would benefit from my recent award-winning study on the evolution of songbird migratory patterns.

If you were referred to the internship by someone, give their name and the reason for the referral following the sentence in which you explain the internship that interests you.

Dr Brown of Texas A&M’s zoology department recommended this internship to me. Owing to my passion and experience in coastal fisheries, she said that your available post would be a great fit for me.

Request a letter of reference or contact information from the person who recommended you to the programme so that the letter recipient may validate your claim.

Step 5: Describe Yourself, Your Achievements, & Goals

Use the second paragraph after the introduction to substantiate your statements with specifics regarding the knowledge, objectives, and experience you indicated. Explain why you believe you are a good fit for the internship.

I think that I’m an excellent fit for this zoological internship, thanks to my prior educational, personal and professional experiences. I strongly believe that this internship will play a key role in paving my career path and will contribute to the best of my abilities.

Step 6: Conclude Your SOP & Sign

Lastly, in your statement of purpose for an internship, reiterate your interest in the internship as you close the letter. Include a signature and your contact details.

I believe I have a lot to contribute as a research assistant, and I think interning for your department would be a fantastic opportunity. Please contact me at (311) 553-9835 or janes@gmail.com to set up an interview.

Sincerely,
