Sports Scholarships In Canada

Whether you’re helping athletes reach a certain level of fitness, marketing a new sports product, selling tickets, planning a sporting event or more, sports programmes at Canadian colleges will help you land a career in this continually growing industry. With most of the universities in Canada offering a number of sports scholarships in Canada for international students, you’re going to benefit abundantly while pursuing your course. In fact, the sports industry offers exciting opportunities in both business and physical training/competition.

In Canada, there are two associations that oversee university athletics: U SPORTS and the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). U SPORTS calls its athletic scholarship awards “Athletic Financial Awards” (AFAs). These sports scholarships for international students that are offered in Canada are fully reliant on funding, which every university receives in different ways. Some universities provide scholarships through their operating budgets, there may be donors that hand out scholarships as they please, and alumni may even donate to a portion of the funding.

Some Canadian college sports programmes offer overviews on all aspects of the sports industry, while others target one specific aspect. Programme and course subjects that come with sports scholarships in Canada for international students can usually be grouped into these two general categories:

  • Sports Administration, Business, and Management: In these programmes, students will develop a thorough understanding of the sports industry on both the business and athlete levels. Programmes will vary, but course subjects may include governance and game rules, sport event planning, sports marketing and sales, media and corporate sponsorship, recreation programming, and much more. Core courses in business, finance, and communication are also included.
  • Sports Conditioning: Sports conditioning programmes combine both theory and practical courses, so students can not only plan conditioning programmes but also perform them themselves. Physical training courses focus on speed, agility, resistance, balance, and strength, while theory courses in leadership, programme planning and facilities, and league management provide the theoretical knowledge needed for working in the sports industry.

In addition to these categories, students may decide to choose a programme that focuses on a specific area of the sports industry, such as journalism, photography, or marketing with the help of international sports scholarships to fund their studies.

Sports programmes at universities in Canada are offered at the diploma and post-graduate levels. Diploma programmes typically require a Secondary School Diploma or equivalent, which includes a grade 12 English credit. A grade 11 or 12 math credit is also required for some programmes that offer sports scholarships in Canada for international students. Post-graduate sports programmes require a post-secondary diploma or degree, usually in a business- or sports-related field.

There are many areas of the sports industry with opportunities for programme graduates, from sports facilities and professional organizations to retail, supply, marketing, and much more. Job titles include (but aren’t limited to):

  • Sponsorship Coordinator
  • Athletic Director
  • Sports Agent
  • Marketing and Events Coordinator
  • Conditioning Coach
