Physical Sciences (Common Entry) Level 8 BSc (Honours)

The Physical Sciences (Common Entry) courses are designed for applicants who wish to enter Chemical or Physical Science in CIT but are undecided about or wish to postpone selecting a designated Chemistry or Physics qualification until after they have had an opportunity to experience both disciplines.

Common Semester 1: The common Semester 1 programme includes modules in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Computing so that students will have completed an introduction to general science at the end of Semester 1.

At the end of Semester 1, students then select the chemistry or physics Level 8 course that they intend to join in Semester 2 of the first year, and will remain with that course in subsequent years.

The choice of course will be made from the following below options.

Semester 1 at a Glance

• Biology: study of fundamental building blocks of life

• Chemical Principles: study of general chemical interactions

• Physics: study of fundamental basis of energy, light and heat

• Laboratory Skills: understanding the basis for good laboratory practice in a chemistry laboratory

• Mathematics: fundamental mathematical concepts and skills required to understand and solve problems in the modern world

• Instrument Measurement introduces the principles of measurement using a range of instruments and includes the theory and principles of operation of instrumentation pertaining to process and other industries
  
  Semester 2

Semester 2 modules are determined by the designated degree course selected following completion of Semester 1.
 

Semester Schedules

For admission to a programme, standard applicants must

• score the necessary CAO points and

• meet the minimum entry requirements

• Leaving Certificate in six subjects i.e. H5 in two subjects, and O6/H7 in four other subjects. The six subjects must include Mathematics, and either English or Irish.
   

Info re MTU Cork Mathematics Exam only:

Some students who apply to MTU Cork courses may not achieve the required entry standard in Mathematics through the Leaving Certificate. For such applicants, MTU Cork offers a second chance to reach the required entry standard through a MTU Cork Mathematics Exam. This second chance facility allows applicants (depending on their results in the MTU Cork Mathematics Examination) to gain entry to courses with an Ordinary Leaving Certificate Mathematics entry standard, and (with a higher level of performance) courses with a Higher Leaving Certificate entry standard. Leaving Cert Subjects:

Any of the Science subjects are helpful (including Mathematics & Computer Science), Engineering, Technology, and Design & Communication Graphics.

L1: At least 6.0 with no section below 5.5
 

TOEFL

L1: At least 80 - with minimum scores: Listening- 17; Reading - 18; Speaking – 20; Writing - 17

The fees for Physical Sciences (Common Entry) Level 8 BSc (Honours) may vary from - €10,000 to €25,000 anually for tuition fees. The fee's prices may get higher for international students.
