Program Overview

The accounting sector in Singapore is undergoing a major transformation to realise its aim of becoming a leading global accountancy hub for Asia Pacific. To achieve this vision, one of the major initiatives implemented is the creation of new pathways to facilitate entry of degree holders from non-accountancy disciplines.

Introduced in 2006, the SMU MPA has been providing this pathway to new exciting career opportunities in the accountancy sector, both in professional services and corporate accounting. These recognitions offer an accelerated pathway for MPA graduates to satisfy the membership requirements of these global professional bodies, and to qualify for the CPA or CA status. Such recognition gives SMU MPA graduates international mobility and a strong competitive edge over other graduates.

The newly revised MPA curriculum provides candidates with strong business fundamentals, technical skills for various accounting functions and professional accounting services. The programme can be completed in one year on a full-time basis, or over two years on a part-time basis.

CURRICULUM

The MPA programme consists of 14-course units (CU), including 12CU discipline courses, 1CU internship or elective course, and 1CU Professional Development Course. Full-time students complete the programme over 18 months and part-time students over 24 months, commencing in August of each calendar year. Full-time students will continue from August to January after Term 3 for internship and/or global immersion programmes. Part-time students will be enrolled in the evening classes. All students will officially graduate around February and attend the graduation ceremony in July or August.

Professional Development Courses Eligible students can take their internship at any point during the course of study, as long as the 10-week requirement is fulfilled.

**Students are required to take one elective to fulfil the graduation requirement.

TERM STRUCTURE

There will be three continuous academic terms. Each course consists of 12 class sessions of three hours duration.

AUG INTAKE

Classes are on weekdays (Monday to Thursday) from 08:15am to 11:30am or 12:00noon to 3:15pm or 3:30pm to 6:45pm or

weekday evenings from 7:00pm to 10:15pm, and on some Saturdays - 8:45am to 12:00noon and 1:30pm to 4:45pm.

EXEMPTIONS

Exemptions up to a maximum of three courses (excluding Accounting modules), may be granted upon acceptance into the programme and on a case-by-case basis dependent on satisfactory completion of equivalent courses at the university level.

INTERNSHIP

The Career Services team works with students to map out their career preparation and development paths. Through internships and a comprehensive range of training programmes, the career coaches are dedicated to empowering students with the necessary skills to realise their potential and goals. Exemptions are available for students with at least two years of relevant working experience.

GLOBAL IMMERSION PROGRAMME

SMU has always been committed to nurturing global perspectives and cross-cultural understanding among our students. The Global Immersion Programme is designed to provide a unique platform for students to survey the business, cultural and geo-political drivers of economic development in a region or a country. Through faculty seminars, guest lectures, group projects and educational travelling abroad, students will garner international experience and learn best practices in a different cultural and business environment.

ELECTIVE COURSES

Students who are interested in specialised accounting knowledge and new emerging issues can pursue a range of elective courses such as Foundations in Economics, Programming with Data, Blockchain and New Economies and Machine Learning for Business. This gives them the flexibility to enhance their knowledge in their preferred accounting domains and broaden their skill sets.

CSR AND STUDENT ACTIVITIES

SMU organises a myriad of enriching and experiential activities for students to pursue their passion, hone their networking skills and contribute to the community. Students will have the opportunities to take part in industries talks, networking events, recreational and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities, where they are able to experience meaningful and rewarding student life.

Entry Requirement
- Applicants must demonstrate good prior academic performance in an undergraduate degree from a recognised institution of higher learning.
- Applicants must have sufficient background in Mathematics/Calculus.
- GMAT or SMU Admission Test* is a compulsory requirement for admission to this programme.
- Applicants with post-undergraduate working experience will have an added advantage.
- Shortlisted applicants will be invited for an online interview with the Admissions Panel.
- Applicants must show proficiency in the English language. A TOEFL or IELTS test is required if the applicant's undergraduate degree was not conducted in English.

We welcome international graduate students to apply for our full-time MPA programme. Applicants must show proficiency in the English language. Applicants whose medium of instruction in their undergraduate studies is not in English must sit for either TOEFL or IELTS. Professional Communication Workshop

Besides TOEFL or IELTS test, applicants, accepted into the MPA programme, will be required to attend the Professional Communication Workshop. The workshop equips students with the communication tools to flourish in their postgraduate programme as well as be future-ready for the workplace. The course takes a problem-based learning approach. Students develop their ability to deliver a persuasive elevator pitch and collaborate in teams to make a recommendation in a written team proposal and an oral presentation. These skills aim to improve students’ chances of obtaining internships or job offers and enhance their employability. The fee for this workshop is chargeable at S$1,000 per student and is not included in the Tuition Fee.
