This degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) comprising the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Institute of Highway Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation and the Permanent Way Institution on behalf of the Engineering Council as:

• Fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng)

• Partially satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng). A programme of accredited Further Learning will be required to complete the educational base for CEng.
   

  Course content
   

  On this Civil Engineering BEng course you will develop a strong technical background in the key subjects of structural, geotechnical and hydraulic engineering. Management studies and engineering design are also integral parts of the course.

  GCSE:

  A minimum of grade 4 (C) in English Language and Mathematics in addition to other outlined requirements.

  In addition to our other entry requirements, City also accepts T-levels with the following grades:

  • T-Level in Design, Surveying and Construction. Must have an overall “Distinction” with at least B in the core. Must have “Distinction” in the Occupational specialism of Civil Engineering

  • K9 Mathematical techniques (in the Civil Engineering specialism), K9.1 Algebra, including indices, logarithms, linear equations, K9.2 Trigonometric and standard formulae, including circular and triangular measures, K9.3 Elementary calculations and techniques, including integration and differentiation K9.4 Statistical methods, including averages, tendency and dispersion. This may be sufficient.
     

  Contextual offers

  We apply a contextual admissions process for UK undergraduate applicants who have been in care or are the first in their family to enter Higher Education. Those who are eligible may receive a conditional offer with reduced entry requirements, typically two grades lower for A-levels and one grade (or eight tariff points) for BTEC or mixed qualifications.

  Mixed qualifications

  Typically the only scenario where we make conditional offers expressed as UCAS tariff points is when an applicant presents mixed qualifications, most typically a combination of A-levels and a BTEC qualification.

  In this instance, we may make a tariff point offer to present the applicant with more flexibility on equivalencies. In this case, please be aware that we may still ask for a specific score across certain qualifications and subjects. E.g. 'This offer is conditional on you achieving 128 tariff points. This must include A-level Mathematics at grade B.'
   

  Access courses

  Access to Higher Education Diploma in a Physics and Mathematics based discipline for entry to the BEng only. The minimum academic requirement is to achieve 60 credits overall, with 45 credits at Level 3, of which 33 credits must be at Distinction and 12 credits at Merit or higher. Applications are considered on a case by case basis.
   

  Subject exclusions

  We do not accept General Studies and Critical Thinking. These subjects will not be included in any conditional offer we make.
   

  Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

  We welcome applications from students who are completing relevant EPQ Projects. Whilst we recognise the value of these projects in preparing students for independent learning at university, the EPQ is unlikely to form part of any conditional offer we make.
   

  The EPQ will also not lower the specifics of any conditional offer we choose to make. We will consider the EPQ as part of the holistic assessment of the application and it could be used to form part of our final decision at Confirmation stage.
   

  AS levels

  We recognise that there will be differences of opportunity varying by school and college. As not all students will have the opportunity to sit AS Level exams, it is unlikely we will include AS Level grades in any offer we choose to make. Where students have completed an AS Level subject, we will consider this as part of the holistic assessment of the application and it could be used to form part of our final decision at Confirmation stage.
   

  BTEC

  BTEC (Level 3 Nationals only).

  • D*DD in Engineering (First teaching Sept 2016) with minimum grade D in units 1 - Engineering Principles, 7 - Calculus to Solve Engineering Problems and 8 - Further Engineering Mathematics. Candidates must also have a minimum of grade 6 in GCSE Mathematics and Science/Physics.

  • D*DD in Civil Engineering / Construction and the Built Environment / Building Services Engineering (First teaching Sept 2017) with minimum grade D in unit 1 – Construction Principles and unit 15 – Further Mathematics for Construction. Candidates must also have a minimum of grade 6 in GCSE Mathematics and Science/Physics.

     

    English language requirements
     

    If your first language is not English, we will require evidence of English language proficiency. Minimum requirements are:

    IELTS:

    6.0 overall with a minimum of 6.0 in all components.

  • IELTS: 6.0 overall with a minimum of 6.0 in each component.

  • PTE Academic: 58 overall with a minimum of 51 in each component.

Civil engineers plan, design and construct the infrastructure around us, working on projects such as motorways, railways, hospitals and airports. That makes civil engineering a great choice if you want to use your interest in maths, science and technology in the construction industry.

Placement support
 

The School has its own dedicated placements team that provides on-hand placement and internship support and guidance for students throughout their studies.
 

Our team of placement specialists, the Professional Liaison Unit, has extensive experience in helping students to secure professional experience across a range of industries. The team also has longstanding relationships with an impressive and diverse range of companies spanning both large and small organisations.
 

You can undertake a summer internship at the end of each academic year or opt to spend a year on an industry placement at the end of your second year.
 

Placements are paid, and are a fantastic way to gain professional experience in a relevant field as part of your degree. Undertaking a placement year could also count towards the experience requirement for a professional engineering qualification.
 

In recent years Civil Engineering students have been able to obtain placements at leading companies within their chosen field such as:
