About

Leeds Conservatoire is a music and performing arts school located in Leeds, England. It was founded in 1965 under its former name Leeds Music Centre and offered extracurricular music lessons at the Leeds Institute building near Millennium Square, which is now home to Leeds City Museum. The conservatoire introduced the first Jazz degree in Europe in 1993. Following the introduction of new degree programmes in musical theatre, acting, and actor-musician, Leeds College of Music changed its name to Leeds Conservatoire on around 3 August 2020.

 

It offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in a variety of subjects including music performance, composition, jazz, production and sound engineering, musical theatre, and more. There are about 12 undergraduate programmes and more than 5 postgraduate programmes offered at the institution. Leeds Conservatoire’s acceptance rate is 42% and more than 1500 students each year are admitted at this rate. 

 

In addition to its educational offerings, Leeds Conservatoire courses and programmes are offered to  musicians of all ages, it also presents a seasonally scheduled concert series, mostly in its 350-seat auditorium "The Venue." Leeds Conservatoire received the designation of All-Steinway School in 2011, making it the sole conservatoire in England with 90% of its pianos belonging to the Steinway family. 

 

As a member of the Berklee International Network, Leeds Conservatoire has a partnership with Berklee College of Music. Leeds Conservatoire is a member of the European Association of Conservatoires and also a  member of Conservatoires UK.  The school provides students with access to state-of-the-art facilities, a diverse range of performance opportunities, and a faculty of experienced and knowledgeable professionals. Students have access to world-class facilities like a variety of performance spaces and studios for composing, recording and performing until late during term-time. Dining Facilities - The ‘Cafe:Bar’ serves delicious food at affordable prices and is available for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Located in the middle of the building, it stays open late so that students who work late can buy snacks and beverages, and those who live on campus can order from the take-out menu. It serves as a venue for performances as well, organising events including Freshers' Week, pub quizzes, open mic nights, and parties alongside the Students' Union. 

 

Library - The library provides a variety of study spaces as well as vast physical and online music resources. There are about 8000 printed books and e-books available. There are more than 28,000 printed pieces of music for solo and ensemble performances for reading. The library comprises about 80 scholarly journal subscriptions in print and electronic form, including a sizable collection of journal articles in the arts and humanities that have been digitally archived on JSTOR. There is availability to music through websites like I Like Music For Education, Alexander Street Press, and Naxos Music Library.

 

Performance Spaces - In the Venue and Recital Room, the university organizes concerts, recitals, workshops, masterclasses, lectures from business leaders, lunchtime concerts, and film showcases. A 350-seat auditorium known as the Venue is outfitted with theatrical lighting, theatre sound, and high-definition presentation onto a huge motorised screen. The Recital Room features a built-in audio system, high-power projection, and room for up to 120 people. 

 

Residence - The school provides two student housing halls. Their primary housing facility, Joseph Stones House, is situated on the campus itself and has nine levels of lodging with common living areas and en-suite facilities on each floor.
