About
The University of Leeds (UL) is a public research university situated in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. A group of young men founded the Leeds School of Medicine in 1831, removing the need for medical students to study in Scotland, London, or elsewhere. UL became Yorkshire College in 1884 after joining the Leeds School of Medicine (Founded in 1831). In 1887, it merged with Owens College and the University College Liverpool to become the federal Victoria University. King Edward VII granted the university a royal charter in 1904.
Within a few years, enrollment started to rise quickly, and improvements to state education meant that new students arrived with stronger academic backgrounds. The ten years leading up to the start of the war in 1914 saw expansion and stabilization. Most significantly, the young university began to forge a solid tradition of research. Seven out of every eight students at Yorkshire College at the time of its Royal Charter were from the county. The university is now a fully multicultural and international university, welcoming students from all across the United Kingdom and the world.
Some notable alumni include Keir Starmer, the current leader of the Labour Party, Jack Straw, the former secretary of state, Sayeeda Warsi, the former co-chairman of the Conservative Party, Piers Sellers, and six Nobel laureates.

The Leeds University Union is a group affiliated with the National Union of Students that is located on the university's main campus. The union's main objective is to serve Leeds students by providing socializing opportunities, society and group support, help and advisory services, as well as assisting those who want to volunteer, run for office, or get involved in their communities. Libraries & Information Services: Throughout the academic year, the campus libraries are open late seven days a week. The university has one of the largest research libraries in the UK, the library has five sites and houses 2.78 million books, 26,000 print and electronic periodicals, 850 databases, and 6,000 electronic books.
