Semester 1
ENG 101: English Language
The course provides an intensive instruction in the writing process focusing on the organization of ideas in well-developed expository and argumentative essays with emphasis on developing vocabulary and writing examination answers. In the process the students will be able to document their learning experiences effectively. This course prepares students to be proficient in spoken and written English. It is intended to improve way of the use of the English language as a basic tool for professional communications.
ICU 101: Islamic Culture
The course aims to provide knowledge of the concepts and beliefs in Islam that form the basis of Islamic culture. Students are expected to identify the differences, compare values and preferences in Islamic culture with the existing ones. The course consists of a general overview of Islamic culture and arts as an approach to life. The objective of this course is to enable the student to demonstrate awareness of the effects of culture upon interpersonal communications and interact appropriately to the culture of the colleague/patient/client.
BSE 101: Behavioral Sciences & Ethics
The course is designed to give an overview of the main topics in behavioral sciences and Ethics including biological basis of behavior, mental processes, sensation and perception, learning, motivation, intelligence, human development, personality and universal ethical principles. The objective of the course is to enable the student to understand and apply the knowledge, skills and attitude developed in this course to communicate effectively. Students will learn and practice strong values, ethical conduct and social responsibilities, especially personal, academic and professional integrity while developing collaboration in diverse team settings. Students will be trained to display sensitivity to cultural, psychosocial and ethical issues.
CMB 101: Cell & Molecular Biology
The course provides an outline of the organization, function, and regulation of the eukaryotic cell. The cell as a basic unit of life is dealt extensively at the structural, functional and molecular levels. The course lays basics to the understanding of the human body systems and the human body as a whole.
NS-CHC 101: Communication in Health Care
The course introduces the student to the principles of communication that enhances interpersonal communication between self and other individuals in small and large group settings. Scenarios from hospital settings will help the learners to visualize themselves in their future roles; lay emphasis to the increasing importance of communication between patient/client and care providers; and connect between communication practices and quality patient care outcomes.
NS-FON I 101: Fundamentals of Nursing I
This course aims at developing an understanding of the philosophy, objectives and responsibilities of nursing as a profession to the learners. The course imparts knowledge and skills of the current concepts of practice and the development of the nursing profession as well as the health of the individual, family and community. It also provides knowledge of the basic concepts in nursing that forms the foundations of nursing practice. This course will provide legal and ethical concepts in nursing and correlates nursing theories and its implications into nursing practice. In addition, it provides opportunities to practice documentation and infection control measures.
NS-ITP 101: Introduction to Practicum
This course is designed to enable the students to get an early exposure and orientation to the clinical encounters. The students will be trained in the area of infection control and safety and other basics of functionality of the hospital. Orientation to the hospital setting will help the students to understand about the physical infrastructure, various functional departments pertaining to in-patient and out-patient departments, health care team members and their interdependency in providing comprehensive compassionate care. This course will also enable the students to practice effective communication with the health care team members, patients & their families.
Semester 2
USO 101: UAE Society & Cultural Diversity
This course focuses on the unique nature of the UAE society and its political, geographical, cultural, demographical, and social aspects. It highlights the Emirati perspective of contemporary global changes. This course allows the students to explore the Emirati society in global context. The students will be able to get an insight into the unique political, geographical, cultural, demographical, and social aspects of the UAE society. They will use this knowledge in their interpersonal dealings with the individual members of this community when they meet them in the work-related settings or the community. Students will develop awareness of cultural diversity advantages and disadvantages and discuss cultural, social and communication sensitivities and will be able to relate themselves to global context.
ITE 101: Information Technology
This course provides the essential principles and Knowledge on technology sciences for Healthcare Professionals necessary for their day-to-day practice in the world of digital health. In addition, the course will provide concepts that connect applications in developing practical skills for accessing and using the information to deliver quality patient care, use education technology and develop electronic communication skills.
HS-HAP I 102: Human Body Systems – I (Anatomy & Physiology)
The first part of the 2-semester course is designed to introduce the student to the major organs and tissues that form the human body systems including body planes, directions and cavities, Integumentary, Skeletal, Muscular and Nervous Systems and Special Senses. This will be done through didactic sessions in the multimedia labs with opportunities for interactive learning activities. The Gross Anatomy Laboratory sessions will use models and manikins as well as plastinated body parts to make the learning a truly concrete experience.
NS-PTI 102: Professional Trends, Ethical & Legal Issues in Nursing
This course aims at developing an understanding of the history of nursing and nursing as a profession. It equips the student learners with knowledge on the trends, current issues in nursing and helps them to gain skills in ethical decision making and be aware of the legal issues in nursing practice. The course also helps the learners to gain knowledge on the need for licensure and certification, health care policies and advocacy. The course also imparts in depth knowledge in the current concepts and factors influencing contemporary nursing and equip them to maintain the highest degree of professionalism as a member of the health care team.
HS-BIO 102: Biochemistry
The aim of the Biochemistry course is to provide the student with an understanding of the basic structures of biomolecules and their roles in the cellular processes occurring in healthy humans. Comprehension of the structure-function relationships will enable the student to appreciate derangement of function resulting from abnormalities in structures of the biomolecules. Overview of metabolic pathways in the body as well as their changes in common metabolic diseases will also be learnt.
NS-FON II 102: Fundamentals of Nursing II
This course is the second part of concepts of nursing and provides skills that act as a foundation for nursing practice. Students develop psychomotor skills and critical thinking skills, including enhancement of communication skills. It also emphasizes on basic patient care by integrating concepts of the nursing process, holistic care and comprehensive health care. The course also provides opportunities to practice documentation and infection control measures.
NS-PRA I 201: Practicum I
This course is the first of a series of seven clinical practicum courses, which provides clinical experiences where in the student is trained to develop basic skills in communication, meeting basic physical, mental and spiritual needs of individual patients, reporting and recording of signs and symptoms, history taking, nursing process and recognizing patient as an individual with basic human needs, a member of the family and community, carrying out simple nursing procedures and assisting in treatments under direct supervision of a clinical faculty.
Semester 3
HS-HAP II 201: Human Body Systems – II (Anatomy & Physiology)
The second part of the 2-semester course is designed to introduce the student to the major organs and tissues that form the human body systems including, Circulatory, Lymphatic, Respiratory, Digestive, Urinary, Endocrine and Reproductive Systems and common tests and procedures specific to the organ systems. This will be done through didactic sessions in the multimedia labs with opportunities for interactive learning activities. The Gross Anatomy Laboratory sessions will use models and manikins as well as platinated body parts to make the learning a truly concrete experience.
HS-MIC 201: Microbiology
This course is designed to enable students to acquire understanding of fundamentals of microbiology and identification of various microorganisms. It also provides opportunities for practicing infection control measures in hospital and community settings.
NS-HAT 201: Health Assessment
This course provides the students with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform a comprehensive health assessment utilizing appropriate history collection and physical examination techniques. This course also discusses normal assessment findings, frequently seen variations from normal. The legal, ethical, and cultural aspects of the assessment and documentation are also embedded in the course.
NS-FED 201: First Aid, Emergency & Disaster Nursing
This course is essential for all students pursuing a health professional career. The course is designed to give students in depth understanding of first aid, disaster and emergency situations either in pre-hospital settings or in disasters. It provides students the knowledge and skill to deliver basic and complex care to urgent, emergent, and critical patient population. It provides opportunities to enhance critical thinking and systematic inquiry skills that are necessary to provide care to victim(s) until the arrival of a healthcare team and coordinating with various agencies. This course will provide an understanding of the situations they may face before, during and after a disaster & emergency situation and develop skills and strategies to provide effective and immediate care.
NS-HIS 201: Health Informatics
This course prepares the student to utilize informatics and technologies in the health care of individuals for the enhancement of patient outcomes as well as to gain an appreciation of the proficiencies required of an expert knowledge worker and apply these competencies to routine practice as a health care professional.
NS-PRA II 201: Practicum-II
This course is the second of a series of seven clinical practicum courses, which provides clinical experiences in health assessment of body’s various system under direct supervision of a clinical faculty member.
Semester 4
BIS 101: Biostatistics
This course presents biostatistics related to health and medical problem solving in analytical way. This course introduces the student to the principles of statistics and concept of clinical trial design and analysis. Student will be able to explain the concept of variables, data description; probability and concepts of descriptive and inferential statistics; and to demonstrate basic knowledge of application data analyses in applied health sciences. Student will be able to make decision about appropriate use of descriptive and inferential statistics according to the type of data and study design for answering a research question. This is foundation and prerequisite for courses which will be taken later, such are research and evidence-based medicine.
HS-PAP 202: Pathophysiology
This course introduces the students to the study of causes and mechanisms of diseases. The responses to injury are dealt first at the cellular level followed by changes at the level of tissues and organs. The topics include cellular pathology, inflammation and tissue repair, hemodynamic, genetic, and immune disorders, neoplasia, disorders of nutrition and environmental pathology. The students then learn to apply the concepts of disease mechanisms in the setting of each organ system. The underlying pathologic basis of systemic diseases will be dealt extensively.
HS-PTH 202: Pharmacology & Therapeutics
This course presents basic pharmacologic principles along with the mechanism of action and side effects of drugs commonly used in health professional practice. The lessons are organized using a systems approach and will deal with the pathophysiology of disease and discuss the drug groups used for treatment. Case studies will be used to discuss how drugs affect medical intervention and how host factors may affect drug effectiveness.
NS-AHN I 202: Adult Health Nursing-I
This course introduces and develops the student’s knowledge and skills in patient care with medical and surgical problems. It includes review of relevant anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology and management in specific problems and the nursing management as an introduction to medical surgical nursing.
NS-PRA III 202: Practicum-III
This course is the third of a series of seven clinical practicum courses, which provides clinical experiences in health assessment of various body systems, perioperative nursing, and nursing management of specific medical surgical conditions under direct supervision of a clinical faculty member.
Semester 5
NS-NRH 301: Nursing Research
This course is designed to enable students to acquire understanding of basic concepts of research, research process, research methodology, evidence based nursing practice and statistics. The course will enable students to identify research problems / questions; develop skill in literature review ; acquire knowledge on research designs and data collection methods ; understand the ethical components to be considered in research ; equip skill in developing a research proposal and understand the importance and the process of communicating research findings.
NS-AHN II 301: Adult Health Nursing-II
This course is designed to enable the student to provide nursing care in different settings and facilities. It will enable the students to recognize the etiology, pathophysiology, symptomatology, diagnostic measures, and management of patients with medical and surgical conditions in Endocrine, Cardiology, Neurology, Respiratory, Burns, Ophthalmology, ENT, Oncology, Geriatrics and Rehabilitation. This course will equip the students with required knowledge and skill to function independently and provide comprehensive nursing care.
NS-MHN 301: Mental Health Nursing
This course presents basic concepts, theories of personality development, and principles of practicing mental health nursing care. It focuses on the advanced classification and symptomatology of mental disorders. The course helps students to apply theories about causation and treatment of mental disorders and chemical dependency to patients in a psychiatric setting. It also enables students to practice therapeutic communication techniques and nurse-patient relationship skills as well as the implementation of nursing care plans for patients with mental disorders. This course also integrates Evidence-Based Practices, research, cultural diversity, ethics, and legal issues which are related to mental health disorders.
NS-PRA IV 301: Practicum-IV
This course is the fourth of a series of seven clinical practicum courses, which provides clinical experiences in adult health nursing procedures and mental health nursing procedures under direct supervision of the clinical faculty members.
Semester 6
NS-CCN 302: Critical Care Nursing
This course is designed to enable the students to provide nursing care in critical care settings and facilities. It is intended to support students in developing skill and knowledge in diagnosis and management of clients with critical illnesses. It will aid students to develop skills in assessment of trauma and emergency conditions, ethical & legal cases, psychological issues and management of metabolic and systemic emergencies.
NS-NED 302: Nursing Education
This course is designed to equip the learners with the basic knowledge of educational concepts, teaching-learning process, methods of teaching, preparation and effective use of audio-visual aids for classroom teaching as well as health promotional activities for individuals, families and community. It also provides learners the basic knowledge on evaluation process and tools that aid in assessment. The course prepares students for the educator/instructor role in academic settings as well as role of health educator in community settings.
NS-CMN 302: Community Health Nursing
The course is designed to develop in depth understanding and expertise in the field of community health nursing. The student will gain knowledge regarding the principles of promotion and maintenance of physical, mental, psychosocial and environmental health of individuals, families & groups as well as develop skills required to manage various communicable and non-communicable diseases. Students will be exposed to culturally diverse population and will gain experience in dealing with health disparities among individuals, groups and community at large.
NS-PRA V 302: Practicum-V
This course is the fifth of a series of seven clinical practicum courses, which provides Clinical experiences in Critical Care Nursing and Community Health Nursing under direct supervision of a clinical faculty member.
Semester 7
NS-MTN 401: Maternal Health Nursing
This course is designed to enable students to acquire knowledge and skill in care of woman and family throughout pregnancy and childbirth. It will equip the students to provide safe nursing care to normal and high-risk pregnancies during antenatal, intranatal and postnatal period. Also, will enable them to develop competence in assessment and providing nursing care to normal newborns and to women with common gynecological conditions.
NS-CHN 401: Child and Adolescent Health Nursing
This course is designed to enable students to understand current trends in child and adolescent health nursing including concepts of integrated management of neonatal and childhood illnesses and preventive pediatrics. The course will also enable them to gain knowledge on legal and ethical aspects, behavioral problems among children & adolescents and care of children & their families during hospitalization. The course equips students with skills in caring for normal and high-risk newborns in the neonatal intensive care units; as well as children and adolescents with system-wise infections, anomalies and disorders. The course will also provide them with skills in perioperative nursing care and pain management in children and adolescents and also efficiently manage children in emergencies in the pediatric intensive care unit.
EIS 101: Entrepreneurship, Innovations & Sustainability
This course aims to initiate final year students in innovation process, enable them with basic entrepreneurship skills and make them understand the concepts of sustainability in the modern world in field of their future profession. The course is designed in 3 parts in order to explain main principles of entrepreneurial process; to link them with concepts of innovation and to engage in sustainability leadership to affect positive societal change. For future medical professionals this course has to ensure ability of appropriate decision making balanced between professional & ethical approaches on one side finance and business on the other side.
NS-PRA VI 401: Practicum-VI
This course is the sixth of a series of seven clinical practicum courses, which provides clinical experiences in child & adolescent health nursing and obstetrics & gynecology nursing under direct supervision of the clinical faculty and preceptors.
Semester 8
NS-NML 402: Nursing Management & Leadership
This course is designed to provide the students a basic knowledge about the principles and functions of management and its application to the nursing service. This is also designed to enable students to acquire understanding of the professional responsibilities, legal and ethical implications, staffing, budgeting, quality improvement, prospects and contribute effectively for the growth of the profession.
NS-PRA VII 402: Practicum-VII (Extended Clinical Practicum)
This course is the seventh of a series of seven clinical practicum courses, which provides extended clinical experiences in Medical and surgical Nursing including critical care , Operation Room, child health nursing, obstetrics and gynecology nursing, mental health nursing and community health nursing and management of nursing service department under direct supervision of the clinical faculty members. It provides experiential learning opportunity to students by recognizing the diversity of varied population and environment. Emphasis is laid to distinctively emerge as a nurse researcher, efficient care provider and effective team member. This course will allow students to take up responsibilities in direct patient care, communication and routine ward activities. It also comprises of pre-licensing course with emphasis on preparation for the Licensure Examination.
NS-RPT 402: Research Project
This course is designed to enable the students to successfully complete a group research project. This is achieved by enabling them to equip skill in planning and implementing the steps of the research process from identifying and presenting a research problem; demonstrate skill in carrying out literature review; develop knowledge and skill in applying the appropriate research methodology; demonstrate accountability by addressing the ethical concerns and preparing an informed consent ; demonstrate skill in preparing and presenting a research proposal ;develop research instruments ; Plan and implement the data collection ; analyze the data and interpret the study findings; develop skill In writing and presenting the research project and process communicating the research findings.
