Here’s Everything You Need To Know About Verbal Communication

Verbal Communication

Written by Pareeshti Rao

It all started with an impulsive urge to befriend Enid Blyton and be a part of the famous five! Writing since then has been my magic wand and I've used it to sprinkle words like fairy dust and express myself thereat.

Let’s rewind a little to the past and recall those good old days when Chinese Whispers used to be the most frequently played game. Did you ever notice how the original message in the game never actually reached the last player in the circle?  That is what happens when you neglect to pay attention to clarity in communication. Back then, clarity did not really matter, especially in the game. But now that you’re either looking to join uni or landing a career, you should know what it takes to communicate well. There’s a difference between what you communicate to someone vs how you communicate with someone, and good verbal communication is mostly affected by the former. Whether you’re giving interviews for admission, working on projects and seminars, or consulting your faculty for anything, ensuring clear communication matters if you essentially want your message to be delivered as-is.

It is essential to understand that excellent oral communication cannot be completely separated from nonverbal communication in the form of body language, tone of voice, and facial expressions. Speaking clearly, remaining silent and attentive, being well-behaved, and adhering to certain general standards of behaviour will all aid in the process of oral communication. This article contains everything you need to know about verbal communication and how you can benefit from it if you understand its importance.

Verbal Communication Definition

The verbal component of communication relates to the words we use, as well as how they are heard and interpreted. The starting of a discussion is highly essential in many personal interactions between individuals since the first impression has an influence on future success and communication. How can you ensure that you’re building a good first impression?

  • It is beneficial to speak with clarity and have a good choice of words.
  • It’s equally important to consider how we pick words and how they’re perceived.
  • Nonverbal communication is just as significant as verbal communication.
  • General conduct is also essential.
  • It is essential to be just as silent as attentive.

Verbal Communication Types

There are 4 major types of verbal or oral communication, and we have listed them below for you:

Interpersonal Communication: This form of communication is very confidential and restricted to oneself, more like a conversation with yourself when you’re contemplating something.

Intrapersonal Communication: This usually occurs between two people, and is thus a one-to-one conversation. When you need to pass on a message to someone that is specific to them or if you have a random argument with your friend, you use your intrapersonal skills.

Small-Group Conversation: This usually involves a group of more than 2 people, as in the case of group discussions, or group studies.

Public Communication: This usually takes place when one individual talks to a large audience consisting of a huge number of people with common interests, as in the case of a public speech, or say a stand-up comedy.

Advantages Of Verbal Communication

Verbal communication is defined as anything that is expressed by words or another kind of communication. It is categorized into two categories: verbal/oral communication – when you say or convey something to someone orally and written communication – when you pen down your thoughts and convey something using a board/paper as the medium, as in the case of writing a personal statement.

Verbal or oral communication involves activities such as telling, singing, questioning, and replying. There are several benefits to this form of communication. We have listed some of the verbal communication advantages for you:

  • Saving Time – Communicating verbally isn’t as time-consuming as non-verbal communication. We’re all aware of how fast gossip or rumours can spread!
  • Saving Money – No, it doesn’t cost you as much to communicate orally with someone, regardless of whether you’re talking to one person or a crowd.
  • Quick Feedback – Since verbal communication takes place on the spot, your chances of getting an immediate response or feedback are higher.
  • Convenience – Talking to a person (s) face to face is so much easier when compared to using nonverbal cues.
  • Clarity – Since communicating verbally is a direct way of passing information, there is more clarity unless there’s a chain involved.
  • Ease of Preparation – You convey what you have in mind. It’s as simple as that. Even in the case of a public speech, or preparing for an interview or a viva, you go through the required content well, and you’re good to go!

  • Careful selection of words: Effective communication is dependent on how effectively we pick our words.
  • Attentive Listening: How carefully we listen to others and absorb their message is what adds to active listening.
  • Well-Prepared: In case of debates, group discussions, or public speaking, if you prepare well as per the tastes of your audience, and practice enough, your message transmission will be on point.
