Semester Schedules

For admission to a programme, standard applicants must

• score the necessary CAO points and

• meet the minimum entry requirements
   

Leaving Certificate in six subjects i.e. H5 in two subjects, and O6/H7 in four other subjects. The six subjects must include English, Irish, Mathematics, and a Laboratory Science Subject*.
 

Info re MTU Mathematics Exam only:

Some students who apply to MTU courses may not achieve the required entry standard in Mathematics through the Leaving Certificate. For such applicants, MTU  offers a second chance to reach the required entry standard through a MTU Mathematics Exam. This second chance facility allows applicants (depending on their results in the MTU  Mathematics Examination) to gain entry to courses with an Ordinary Leaving Certificate Mathematics entry standard, and (with a higher level of performance) courses with a Higher Leaving Certificate entry standard.

The fees for Analytical and Pharmaceutical Chemistry (BSc degree) (Level 7) BSc may vary from  - €10,000 to €25,000 anually for tuition fees. The fee's prices may get higher for international students.

These courses prepare students for careers in a major growth area of strategic importance to industrial development both in Ireland and abroad. Prospective students should be aware that the chemical industry offers well-paid secure employment in a wide range of career options, and has a high and growing demand for chemistry graduates.

The Bachelor of Science in Analytical and Pharmaceutical Chemistry prepares students for careers as chemical laboratory technicians, who perform duties such as preparation of chemicals and samples for use, analysis of raw materials and/or products of chemical processes, setup/ maintenance/use of chemical instrumentation. Computerised instruments and information technology generally are of great importance to the work of technicians, who may work in quality assurance, analysis, research, development, and production.

Career opportunities exist not only in the BioPharmaChem industry, but also in such diverse areas as environmental analysis, elemental analysis (metallurgy), and food/beverage processing, forensic analysis, contaminant analysis (e.g. in sports), etc.

Graduates have become senior technicians, analysts, laboratory managers, and quality control supervisors. Some have progressed into company management positions over the years, and some have started and managed their own companies.

A period of work experience in industry at the end of the third year gives students a broader perspective of the industry and its role.
